For Clash of Clans’ real 10th anniversary, we celebrated a fake 40th Anniversary instead, pulling fans into an alternate universe where Clash had existed since 1982. The goal was to solidify Clash of Clans as an iconic gaming franchise that belongs on the same level of Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Pac Man, and all the other video games that have shaped our culture and lives. But to do that, we needed an extra 40 years. So, we made them up.
“Clash from the Past” was the biggest campaign effort in the brand’s history, going to absurd lengths to ensure that no matter where fans looked, they found a treasure trove of never-before-seen content that backed up an increasingly-hard-to-disbelieve Clash timeline.
From animated cinematics and a 20-minute-long documentary featuring a fake origin story, to 3 playable decade-specific games, to brand partnerships with Champion, Topps, and General Mills (with an actual cereal available in stores), we took the universe our fans love, and gifted them 40 extra years to play with.
The documentary was the #1 Video Trending on Youtube when it launched and the entire campaign garnered the highest fan sentiment In the brand’s history.
The two-minute spot will launch on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube on October 17th, and then can be seen in-stadium for their opening night on October 19th.
